Laser Hawk Wins 2015 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap

March 18th, 2015

Group 1 winner Laser Hawk has returned to the races in the best way possible this afternoon, displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight at Broadmeadow Racecourse to take out the featured Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m).

Jumping from the gates on fairly, leading jockey Hugh Bowman settled the Artie Schiller gelding within the pack of eight, allowing early leaders Countryman, Woodbine and Le Cordon Bleu to set a reasonable tempo away from the gates and approaching the bend.

Offered a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight, Laser Hawk quickly kicked into gear an pressed forward, opening a gap of more than a length and withstanding a late charge from outsider Scorpio Queen; Mighty Lucky boxing on for third.

Trainer Joe Pride was understandably pleased with Laser Hawk’s victory in the 2015 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap, and revealed races like the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during The Championships are not beyond consideration.

“I was just hoping we’d get a decent run and get a good fitness run into him,” Pride said.

“But he just sat deep there and he did have three trials so there’s been plenty of work put into him.

“With all respect to his opposition there mostly out of restricted grade and this old bloke’s a Group 1 winner so comes in pretty handy when you’ve only got to give them four and five kilos.

“He’s in the Doncaster, he’s in the Queen Elizabeth; he’s in those races so we’ll just see how he pulls up from today.”

Bowman delivered a typically polished ride on Laser Hawk for success in the 2015 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap and was quick to praise the class of his classy partner immediately after dismounting.

“There’s no substitute for class and we saw what he did as a three-year-old,” Bowman said.

“He would have been a genuine weight-for-age horse as a four-year-old had he said intact.

“Obviously he’s had a few issues but he’s been with Joe for a while and he did it that hard way but he’s all class.

“The plan was to go forward and he was slow away and Joe said whenever he’s back in the field he doesn’t race well.

“There didn’t appear to be much pace on paper so I thought I’d just press on up … they didn’t steady so I just got him in a nice rhythm and like I said there isn’t a substitute for class and he had a bit on them.”
